Old Testament

  1. In Exodus 12:34 why did the people take their bread dough before it was leavened?
  2. Was Moses’ parting of the Red Sea Instantaneous? If not, how long did it take. Exodus 14:21.
  3. What advice did Moses father-in-law, Jethro, give to Moses? Did Moses follow the advice? Was it good advice? Exodus 18:13-27.

New Testament

  1. Why did Jesus say the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these (i.e. little children)? Matthew 19:13-15.
  2. Explain the meaning of parable of the man with the vineyard in Matthew 20:1-16.
  3. Why was the king angry (Matthew 22:11-13) that a man came to his son’s wedding without wearing his fancy wedding clothes. After all, hadn’t be invited at the last minute? Read Matthew 22:2-14.

Discussion Questions:
Old Testament

  1. During the famine in Egypt, Joseph, on behalf of Pharaoh, obtained all of the people’s money, livestock and land. Why didn’t the people plan ahead and set aside grain for the famine, as Pharaoh did? Genesis 47:13-26.
  2. In modern times, if a business raises prices dramatically during a time of crisis, it is called “price gouging,” and is considered a crime? Was is wrong for Joseph and Pharaoh to take advantage of the Egyptians to get all of their money, cattle, and land? Genesis 47:13-26.
  3. Why were Joseph’s brothers afraid when their father died? Were their fears justified? Why did Joseph let his brother’s off so lightly, after they’d sold him into slavery? Genesis 50:15-21.
  4. Why did Pharaoh want to kill the Hebrews’ baby boys, but not the baby girls? Exodus 1:13-22.

New Testament

  1. Why did Herod think that Jesus was John the Baptist, risen from the dead? Matthew 14:1-12.
  2. Matthew 14:23 contains one of several accounts of Jesus going to a place to pray alone. Should we consider this as an instruction to believers to pray in solitude? Matthew 14:16-23.
  3. Why was Peter able to walk on water? Why did he start to sink? What does this tell you about your faith? Matthew 14:24-33.
  4. What did Jesus Mean when he said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven”? Matthew 18:3

Old Testament

  1. Why isn’t Reuben’s sin with Bilhah (Genesis 35:22), dealt with more directly, rather many years later (Genesis 49:4).
  2. Both Jacob and his wife, Rachel, engaged in deceit when they flet Laban. Genesis 31:17-24. How does deception revisit the family later, and what are we to make of it? See Genesis 34:13-31, Genesis 37:12-36, and Genesis 38:12-30.
  3. In the story of Judah and Tamar, why was the punishment for the daughter-in-law’s sin to be death (Genesis 38:24), but there was no punishment for the same sin, committed by Judah? Genesis 38.
  4. Why didn’t Joseph tell Potiphar what happened in the incident with Potiphar’s wife, so as to avoid being thrown in prison? Genesis 39:7-20.

New Testament

  1. What did Christ mean when he said, “I didn’t come to send peace, but a sword.” Matthew 10:34-36.
  2. Why didn’t Jesus just answer yes or no when John the Baptist two of his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?” Matthew 11:1-6.
