Read the whole Bible in one year Week 40, October 8, 2011: Straying from God This week's Reading: October 1 to 7 Old Testament: Isaiah 62:6 to Jeremiah 9:26 New Testament: Philippians 2:19 to Colossians 3:17 Psalms: Psalm 73:1 to 78:55 Proverbs: Proverbs 24:13 to 24:27 Old Testament Jeremiah 3:1 mentions a man divorcing his wife. Is he referring to something besides marriage? Jeremiah 3:1 (RSV) [1] "If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man's wife, will he return to her? Would not that land be greatly polluted? You have played the harlot with many lovers; and would you return to me? says the LORD. Deuteronomy 24:1-4 (RSV) [1] "When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a bill of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, [2] and if she goes and becomes another man's wife, [3] and the latter husband dislikes her and writes her a bill of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies, who took her to be his wife, [4] then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring guilt upon the land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance. New Testament What is the “persuasive argument” that is deluding the Colossians? Colossians 2:4 (NASB) [4] I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument. Beginning in January 2012: The Mens Breakfast group, will work toward becoming more like Christ, through study of this classic book by Thomas à Kempis.
