  • During the battle with the Amorites, God made the Sun and the Moon stand still. What was the point of this occurrence; and are we to take this story literally? (i.e. did the Sun and Moon actually stop moving, or is this just a figure of speech?)

New Testament

  • The rich man who went to Hades wanted to warn his brothers about this place
of torment. Why was his request denied?

Proverbs 12:25 – 13:6

Discussion Questions:
Old Testament

  1. Deuteronomy 23:19-20 prohibits charging interest (usury) on loans to other Israelites (brothers), but permits it as to strangers (foreigners). What is the reason for this rule; and should we extend this rule to prohibit charging interest on a loan to a Christian brother?
  2. Deuteronomy 24:1-4 sets out rules for divorce. Should we consider these rules to mean that God approves of divorce? Could a man divorce his wife for any trivial reason (or no reason at all)?

New Testament

  1. Why did Jesus tell a potential follower to not take time to even bury his father? Luke 9:59-60.
  2. Does Luke 12:29 mean we not should care at all about what we eat or our other physical needs, because God will take care of everything?

Deuteronomy 5:1 – 20:20

Next Week’s Reading Apri 2 – 8
Deuteronomy 21:1 – 32:52
Luke 9:51 – 12:59
Psalm 74:1 – 78:64
Proverbs 12:11 – 12:24

Discussion Questions:
Old Testament

  1. Deuteronomy describes a system for dealing with the poor and others in need. How does the Israelite’s system compare with modern notions on this matter? Would the Israelite’s system work if implemented in our modern society?
  2. In Deuteronomy 7:1-2, God tells the Israelites to utterly destroy certain nations as they take their land. Then, in Deuteronomy 7:3-4, He instructs them not to permit their children to intermarry with the people of those nations. If they had “utterly destroyed” these nations, who was left to marry? And do these verses apply to modern Christians—that is, should we interpret God’s instructions to mean we should not marry people from other nations?

New Testament

  1. How was Jesus’ attitude toward women unexpected among the Jews? Why was he criticized and why did he treat women as he did? Luke 7:36-50.
  2. In Luke 9:1-5, Jesus sent the 12 Apostles out to heal the sick. Why did Jesus instruct them to take nothing with them—no spending money or food; not even an extra coat? Is there any lesson or application here for modern Christians?
