One Year Bible Challenge, 1st week in January

First Week in January

Week of January 1-7, 20111

This is the “One Year Bible Challenge:” to read the entire Bible in one year. Assuming a normal reading level, this can be done by spending about 10-15 minutes per day, each and every day. When I asked my Men’s Breakfast Group how many of them wasted 10-15 minutes every day, some thought they wasted more on the order of 10-15 hours per day. Are YOU ready for the challenge?

OLD TESTAMENT READINGS: Genesis 1:1 to Genesis 18:19

Themes and stories: God created the world, animals, plants, human beings, and lots of other stuff. The first two humans, Adam and Eve, disobeyed God, and got thrown out of the beautiful garden God had given them. One of their children, Cain, murdered his brother, Abel. …Time passed… Human beings sinned and disobeyed God some more. God gave directions to Noah on how to build a huge ship, called the Ark. Noah did so. He followed God’s instructions exactly, and brought his family and a number of animals with him. God flooded the earth. Only Noah, and the people and animals on the Ark survived. …Time passed… The people living in Babel decided to build a huge tower. They were too proud. God didn’t appreciate their attitude. He made them speak different languages to confuse them and frustrate their towering plans. …Time passed… Abram was born. God made a covenant with his people. Abraham would be the father of many nations, and God would be their God. Abraham’s people would follow God’s law and circumcise their male children. Easier said than done.

Key points:

  1. God created us–and everything else. Consider the implications of accepting the theory that our world “evolved” without the intervention of God.
  2. The importance of God’s Covenant with Abraham.

Psalms: Psalms 1:1 to Psalms 7:17
Proverbs: Proverbs 1:1 to Proverbs 2:5

NEW TESTAMENT READINGS: Matthew 1:1 to Matthew 6:24

Themes and stories: Jesus Christ was born of the virgin, Mary. Jesus’ parents fled to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod. Herod killed all the baby boys under 2 years old in an attempt to kill Jesus. Plan failed. …Time passed… The Devil tempted Jesus. Plan failed. Jesus taught in the synagogue and elsewhere. Many were amazed. Some of the religious leaders didn’t like Jesus.
Key points:

  1. We start to get an appreciation of who Jesus was, the son of man and the son of God.

FOOTNOTES
  1. The notes, summaries and points on this page are intended as bookmarks of important matters which are covered in this week’s readings. They are not intended as complete summaries of readings. Please forgive me if some of my summaries are not 100% on point. Read the manual–i.e. Bible–so that you will get a more clear understanding of the material. Thank you.

  2. Obviously, there is too much material in this week’s readings for a discussion of every key point. The “DISCUSSION POINTS AND VERSES” are probable topics for discussion, but these topics are subject to change.

Christian Mens Breakfast, Saturday, January 8, 2011 — ONE YEAR BIBLE CHALLENGE

The discussion notes ( PDF / TEXT ) for breakfast on Saturday, January 8, 2011 are now online — ”One Year Bible Study, Lesson No. 1”. This week we begin our new study, as we read through the whole Bible (i.e. 100%) in one year. We are starting at the beginning–Genesis. Also reading the New Testament in parallel, starting with Matthew. If you have not yet committed to reading the whole Bible in one year, there is still time. Study verses: Genesis 1:23-31.

This year we are reading through the entire Bible. See ReadTheWholeBible.COM for more information. If you would like details so you can join us, or if you have any other questions, please call Tom Truex. Or send an email by using the CONTACT form on K-Line.ORG.

Happy New Year

I hope that everyone is off to a great 2011. Best wishes for your experiences in reading the Bible in the next year. Over two dozen people are reading through the Bible as part of our group. I have distributed Bibles to almost all of you. If you need a One Year Bible, and haven’t received one yet, please call me. We have a few more copies on order, which should get here this week. The price is still the same. Free.

Genesis is one of the the most action-packed, exciting books ever written. You may be tempted to read ahead. My advice: stick with the readings contained in the One Year Bible. If you have not been a daily Bible reader, I also encourage you to keep up with the daily readings by reading the indicated verses every day, at the same time of day. In other words, make Bible reading a part of your daily routine, so that it becomes a habit. First thing in the morning works best for me–plus it has the added benefit of helping me to get off to a great start, before I get caught up with all the other things that clutter my mind during the day.
