Discussion Questions:
Old Testament

  1. In Genesis 19:8, Lot offered his two daughters to the mob in place of the two angels. What was Lot thinking in order to make such an offer? Read Genesis 19:1-26.
  2. Why doesn’t the Bible seem to condemn or punish the great sin of Lot’s daughters. Did Lot share any part in this sin? Genesis 19:30-38.
  3. Did Rebekah have a choice in going with Abraham’s servant to marry Isaac?. Why was the servant is such a hurry to go home? Read Genesis 24:51-57.
  4. Why did Jacob have to work 7 years in order to marry Rachel (Genesis 29:16-18)? His father did not have to work for his bride, Rebekah.
  5. Jacob’s two wives,1 and each of their servants had children with Jacob. Read Genesis 29:31-30:24. Was it a sin for him to have multiple wives, and to have children with women who were not his wives? See also 1 Timothy 3:2 and Titus 1:6.

New Testament

  1. According to Matthew 6:19-21; and 6:25-34 is it a sin to plan for your future? Can you take your planning too far?
  2. Matthew 7:1 says “Judge not, that ye be not judged.” But aren’t Christians called on to make judgments about lots of things about other people? Is it OK to judge on some things? If so, what?
  3. A disciple of Jesus wanted to bury his dead father before he followed Jesus. Jesus told him to follow Him (Jesus) and “Leave the dead to bury their own dead.” Does this response seem harsh? Could you imagine someone today addressing a fellow believer in this manner? Matthew 8:19-22

  1. Who was Eliezer (see Genesis Chapter 24), and in what way did he exhibit the traits of a “true servant?”
  2. Why doesn’t the Bible openly condemn Lot and his daughters for their behavior? Genesis 19:30-38.
  3. Why did Jacob have to work to pay for his wife? Genesis 29:16-28

New Testament

  1. Why did Jesus tell the paralysed man that his sins were forgiven? Matthew 9:2
  2. Jesus sent his twelve disciples to the Jews to preach, heal, and cast out demons. Why did he instruct them, “Whoever doesn’t receive you, nor hear your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake off the dust from your feet?” Matthew 10:5-14
  3. What, if anything, is wrong with judging others? When, if ever, is judging others appropriate? See Matthew 7:1-5

Old Testament

  1. What was the sin(s) that Adam and Eve committed?
  2. God gave man “Dominion” in Genesis, ch. 1. Does “Dominion” include the right to use animals for food?
  3. How are we to “subdue” the earth (Gen. 1:28)? God gave mankind dominion BEFORE they were expelled from the Garden of Eden. Was dominion taken from mankind AFTER the fall?

New Testament

  1. When the Devil offered to give Jesus “all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory,” was he bluffing? That is, did the Devil have the power to deliver such a gift? Matthew 4:8-9
  2. The Devil likes to quote scripture. How accurate is the Devil? See Matthew 4: 1-7
